Lobbying firms

If you read or watch the news regularly, you’ll constantly hear about the economy, both at the federal and state levels. All of the information out there about public policies, infrastructure, and regulations can be overwhelming. In fact, it might even seem like little to nothing at all is actually accomplished in government, and it’s all merely talk.

However, people, politicians, and companies are continually proposing, opposing, or defending new policies. A lot goes on behind the scenes, and there are usually several parties involved in shifting or creating policies in a given situation.
So how does this process work? How do companies and organizations receive government funding an subsidies? How can the government regulate or deregulate certain businesses and business practices? How do towns, cities, and states improve the lives and ensure the prosperity of their residents?

Lobbying Firms

Lobbying firms (or lobbyist firms) are the influential force behind many of the decisions made by elected officials. Lobbyist firms essentially work with government officials to establish policies that are mutually beneficial to both parties as well as those affected by the decision. Lobbyists are essentially lawyers, or advocates for a particular group with certain interests. For instance, a lobbying firm might advocate for a company that proposes healthier food options in schools. The influence of this lobbying might result in a city or state enacting stricter health regulations on school lunches. From this decision, the lobbying firm, the food company, and the citizens receiving the food all benefit.

New Jersey Lobbying

New Jersey presents an interesting case for what lobbying can do. For many years the state has suffered economically due to high property taxes, resulting in few people willing to start businesses there. But there are many people out there with ideas of ways to expand New Jersey’s economy. One example of a potentially lucrative business is sports betting. Though not legal in the state of New Jersey as of now, there are some lobbyists advocating for the legalization of the practice as a way of boosting New Jersey’s economy.

Princeton Public Affairs Group (PPAG) is one example of a successful lobbyist firm stationed in New Jersey. The firm works with companies within the state to find solutions for transportation, education, energy, and more.

The next time you’re watching the news or reading an article online about a new law or institution, consider the many people behind those decisions. Lobbying is an important aspect of public policy.
