Why Tungsten Carbide Is the Most Used Metal
When it comes to machinery, tools, and engineering innovations, we could list several different inventions that changed the way we live our lives. But perhaps one of the most useful metals to choose from is tungsten carbide and its applications, such as the tungsten tri-cone bit or tungsten carbide mixed drills. This metal is incredibly useful throughout the industry and is the most chosen metal in various applications.
Tungsten carbide falls between an 8.5 and a 9 on the Moh’s hardness scale. This puts it just behind diamonds, which have a hardness of 10 on the same scale — which means it must be pretty hard! It also has twice the stiffness of steel, but double the density. This means it is about halfway between lead and gold. With this in mind, it’s easy to conclude just how tough and important tungsten carbide really is, and therefore how useful it can be in various industries.
This metal was first discovered more than two centuries ago. However, it was not used in the industry for another 150 years. Yet, Tungsten has become an almost invaluable tool in today’s world. It can come in over a dozen different grades, all of which may be used for different applications. With these various grades, tungsten can be applied throughout the industry in many different ways, such as in the form of a tungsten tri-cone bit or tungsten carbide powder.
Tungsten only forms naturally when it is combined in four major mineral forms with calcium, iron, or manganese — and it can be bound with typical binders like cobalt or nickel. Plus, even it’s scrap can be incredibly useful! Tungsten carbide scrap is typically used in the United States, but about a third of it is exported for recycling.
As you can see, tungsten carbide is incredibly useful, with many different applications. Between its hardness, stiffness, and density, it provides a rather tough material that can be applied to the industry in various ways. While it may be difficult to say just how influential this metal is, tungsten has certainly had a significant impact and perhaps even changed the way the industry works!
